In addition to the numerous grammar and secondary public schools the Brevard County School District operates, a new initiative has allowed an alternative form of education - charter schools. With specific student needs in mind, the Space Coast's charters schools have developed courses and curricula designed to invigorate and inspire young minds. Traditionally, charter schools deliver smaller class sizes, which is thought to be conducive to educational achievement. Brevard County colleges and universities offer many opportunities for residents who want to continue their educations.

Tuition is $320 a credit hour. The Catholic university offers four-year degrees in professional studies, liberal studies and science and information technology. 

Brevard Community College: 1519 Clearlake Road, Cocoa; 632-1111, or  About 12,000 students take courses at BCC each term. 

Campuses are in Cocoa, Titusville, Melbourne and Palm Bay, with a center at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and other off-site facilities. Classes also are available via television (WBCC-TV 68) and the Internet as part of BCC’s Virtual Campus. 

BCC provides a two-year associate of arts degree with guaranteed transfer to a state university, 27 associate of science degrees, and 50 one- or two-year vocational certificates, as well as programs for community education, business training, dual enrollment, early admission and parent education/lab schools. 

BCC tuition is $56.50 a credit hour for Florida residents in degree programs; $46.45 a credit hour for residents in vocational program. Visit for links to registration and the course catalog. The school also offers courses online. 

Chapel Christian University:

Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees are available through the Brevard County distance-education program.  The school is a member of the Commission of Independent Education and the Florida Council of Private Colleges. 

Tuition costs $50 a credit hour for undergraduates; $70 a credit hour for graduate and doctoral programs.

Regionally accredited by the higher learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools offering associate’s/bachelor’s degree in business administration, computer information systems, criminal justice administration, general studies and online degrees. Adult evening classes once a week with eight-week session five times a year. Affordable tuition. Financial aid available. Open to military and civilian students. Campuses also in Orlando and Jacksonville.

Florida Tech is the only independent scientific and technological university in the Southeast. It has been recognized as one of the top national universities by U.S. News and World Report. More than 4,500 students are enrolled at the main Melbourne campus and 10 off-campus graduate centers, including the Spaceport Center. 

Bachelor’s degrees available: aerospace, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, software and ocean engineering; applied mathematics; computer science; computer information systems; environmental science; meteorology; oceanography; aquaculture; ecology; general, marine, molecular and pre-professional (dental, medical and veterinary) biology; biochemistry; chemical management; general, premedical and research chemistry; interdisciplinary science (with military science option); physics; astronomy/astrophysics; pre-professional physics; space sciences; communication; mathematics education; science education with options in biology, chemistry, computer science, earth/space science, general science and physics; accounting; business administration; business information systems; business and environmental studies; management information systems; aeronautical science; aviation meteorology (with and without a flight option); aviation management (with and without a flight option); aviation computer science; psychology; forensic psychology; and humanities.

Master’s degrees are offered in more than 60 disciplines; doctoral degrees in 20. Through the School of Extended Graduate Studies, the university provides online master’s degree programs and professional development programs in such areas as financial planning, programming, and technical and non-technical project management.

Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, associate of science degrees are offered in medical assisting; computer programming; computer engineering technology; computer graphics; computer network engineering technology; computer-animation design; culinary arts; nursing and occupational therapy assistance; and radiologic technology. 
Associate of arts degrees are available for criminal justice; paralegal studies, accounting, business and public administration, and health services. 

The cost is $5,060 per semester.

Associate degrees are available in accounting, business administration, computer information science, criminal justice management, film and video production, and medical assisting. Bachelor’s degrees are available in accounting, business administration, computer information science and criminal justice management. Graduate degrees offered include master of business administration with concentration in accounting, business administration and computer information systems.

Rollins Brevard offers two-year associate of arts programs, bachelor of arts and science degrees, professional development and noncredit opportunities. 
Programs offered include accounting; business administration; computer information systems; computer science; economics; elementary and secondary education; English; environmental management; history; humanities; organizational behavior; organizational communication; psychology; and telecommunications.  Rollins Brevard has Florida teacher certification and recertification programs. Master of arts degrees in teaching are available. 

Tuition is $167 a credit hour for undergraduates. 

The school is scheduled to close this campus in August. 

University of Central Florida Southern Region: Full-service campuses in Cocoa adjacent to BCC’s Cocoa campus at 1519 Clearlake Road; 433-7800, or  Centers located at Kennedy Space Center, Melbourne and Palm Bay.  A public university branch campus offering junior, senior and graduate-level courses. 

Applicants can be Brevard Community College graduates or transfer students who have completed freshman and sophomore years at other approved colleges or universities. UCF-Brevard offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a variety of programs. 

Undergraduate programs include: College of Arts and Sciences: history, liberal studies, political science, psychology, and sociology; College of Business Administration: general business administration, accounting, economics, finance, management, management information systems, and marketing; 

College of Education: early childhood education, elementary education, English language arts education, exceptional education, social science education, vocational education; 

College of Engineering and Computer Science: engineering technology-operations, information systems technology; 

College of Health and Public Affairs: communicative disorders, criminal justice, health services administration, legal studies, nursing, public administration. 

Graduate programs include: College of Arts and Sciences: applied sociology; College of Business Administration: Business Administration; College of Education: elementary education, educational leadership, exceptionalities education and vocational education; College of Engineering and Computer Science: Engineering FEEDS/ITV graduate engineering, industrial engineering/engineering management; College of Health and Public Affairs: criminal justice, health sciences, health services administration, public administration. 

Certificate programs include: domestic violence, ESOL endorsement K-12, initial teacher professional preparation, nonprofit management, pre-kindergarten handicapped endorsement, public administration, teaching English as a second language.

The university offers nine-week terms beginning in January, March, May, August and October. 

Classes meet weeknights and Saturdays. Tuition is $365 a semester hour.
